VITAMIN D ~ ARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH AND it's effect on COVID 19 ?
Hi everyone
I hope you're all healthy and staying sane in this new Covid dominated world!
I wanted to remind you all to think about your Vitamin D levels as winter approaches. I've come across people that have contracted Covid and have been diagnosed with Vitamin D deficiency, hence this reminder.
Now more than ever we want to ensure that our immune systems have every advantage we can give them.
Did you know . . . . .
Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with more severe cases in patients with Covid 19 so possibly a link?
Vitamin D is a key immune supporting nutrient

It's an easy nutrient to obtain, although from October to March we're unable to make enough Vitamin D from exposing our skin to the sun.
Taking it in supplement form is an easy way to increase your levels.
How much should you take?
600 - 800 ius (international units) daily
or
15-20 mcg daily
You want to achieve blood levels of
50-125 nmol/L
or
20-50 ng/ml
You can also get it from some foods but it's hard to obtain adequate amounts.
Good sources include
Wild alaskan salmon ~ 100g = 900 ius
Farmed salmon ~ 100g = 500 ius
Eggs, mushrooms, canned sardines, contain Vitamin D but in much smaller amounts.
This week I came across a new study that found individuals that spend time outside exercising were more likely to have good levels of Vitamin D, independent of their sun exposure. It seems there is a mechanism whereby exercising increases our uptake of this nutrient.
If you think you're deficient you may wish to get a test.
The finger prick blood collected ones are an inexpensive and easily accessible option.

If you have good levels you could just take it every other day.
REMEMBER TOO MUCH IS NOT A GOOD THING....
Don't over do it ~ blood levels over 150 ng/ml can be toxic! And from March to October it's best to obtain your Vitamin D from the sun.
Hope that's helpful. Why the picture of the cows? They're in the sun and made me smile!
